The DNA Of The Western-Looking Mummies In A Chinese Desert Just Rewrote 4,000 Years Of History

There is a desert in western China called the Taklamakan, and its name carries a warning that translates roughly as "the place you enter but never leave." The bodies pulled from this basin have Western faces — high-bridged noses, deep-set eyes, hair the color of straw and rust — buried three and four thousand years ago. For decades, essentially everyone agreed on one thing: these people were strangers who arrived from somewhere else. In October 2021, their own DNA said the opposite. In the journal Nature, a research team led by co-first authors Dr. Fan Zhang, Dr. Chao Ning, and Dr. Ashley Scott, with corresponding authors including Dr. Christina Warinner (Harvard and Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology), Dr. Choongwon Jeong (Seoul National University), and Dr. Yinqiu Cui (Jilin University), published "The Genomic Origins of the Bronze Age Tarim Basin Mummies." The team recovered genome-wide data from 13 individuals at Xiaohe and Gumugou dated to 2100-1700 BCE, plus 5 earlier individuals from the neighboring Dzungarian Basin dated to 3000-2800 BCE. The Dzungarian samples showed the expected Afanasievo steppe ancestry from the north. But the Tarim founders carried none of it. No Western Steppe ancestry. No Afanasievo signal. No Bactria-Margiana or Inner Asian Mountain Corridor markers. Every migration theory of a century of Tarim scholarship failed. The founders were a genetically isolated local population, direct descendants of the Ancient North Eurasians — the Ice Age hunter-gatherers first identified through the 24,000-year-old Mal'ta boy in Siberia, sequenced by Eske Willerslev's team in Copenhagen. But the same study revealed something even stranger. Dental calculus analysis showed the Tarim mummies were dairy pastoralists from their founding, with wheat and dairy from West Asia, millet from East Asia, and ephedra from Central Asia. Genetically isolated. Culturally cosmopolitan. They took the technology of a continent and kept their bloodline untouched.
