Maraton Muharebesi (M.Ö 490) | Pers - Yunan Savaşı

By 490 BC, Persian Emperor Darius the Great was determined to punish the Greek city-states, the greatest obstacle to his westward expansion of conquests. The Athenians, in particular, had incurred Darius's wrath by their support for the anti-Persian resistance during the Ionian Revolt. The burning and looting of Sardis was perceived as an insult to the Persian Empire, and Darius swore revenge and ordered the razing of Athens to the ground. For him, this was not only a military objective but also a matter of honor.
