K–12 Civic Education on the Eve of America’s 250th Anniversary
The eve of America’s semiquincentennial is an opportune time to consider the state of civic education in K–12 schools. What does a typical civics class look like? What are the best models of civic education? At a time when Americans have astonishingly little knowledge of their history and government, how can schools better prepare students for democratic citizenship? How should teachers help students think about the meaning of their nation’s 250th birthday? In this webinar, AEI’s Robert Pondiscio will host a panel of researchers and practitioners to consider these questions. The event will open with remarks from James Traub on his recent book, The Cradle of Citizenship: How Schools Can Help Save Our Democracy, then transition into a moderated conversation about the aspirations, challenges, tensions, and potential of American civic education.
