Why are there so many [non-Roman] Catholics in Ukraine?

Cultures are in different stages of development, and a more advanced culture can stifle a lesser culture into oblivion. The Rus in their Orthodox faith had an institution that provided among other things, literacy and administration, and central identity through faith, things the Lithuanians were less advanced in, despite their strong military and political talents. They did adopt Old Belorussian as their chancelry language. The Lithuanians increasingly feared their identity being swamped by their lesser Rus subjects. Adopting Roman Catholicism was seen as sidestepping that possibility. But that proved to be a case of jumping out of the frying pan and into a fire. The high Lithuanian aristocracy were for ever trying to hold onto their unique identity.
