Natembeya Decries Slow Suam Border Works, Warns Against Illegal Land Grabs

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has expressed concern over the slow pace of construction at the Suam border point and customs office in Trans Nzoia County. Speaking in Suam , the Governor noted that progress on the Kenyan side of the project has lagged behind compared to similar facilities being developed by the Ugandan government across the border. He urged the national government to speed up the works so that local residents can begin to reap the economic benefits once the border is opened for trade. At the same time, Governor Natembeya cautioned individuals who he said have already begun subdividing and sharing out land in the planned border town. He reminded them that the allocation of land remains the mandate of the county government, as enshrined in the Constitution. The Governor announced that land distribution will be carried out through a balloting system, ensuring every resident has an equal opportunity to acquire a plot. He further warned beneficiaries against selling the land once allocated, emphasizing that ownership of a plot in the emerging border town would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Natembeya also called on the national government to respect devolved functions. He accused it of taking up roles that belong to counties without consultation; a move he warned sets a dangerous precedent that could undermine the spirit of devolution. The Governor claimed that such actions were politically motivated, suggesting they were aimed at influencing voting patterns in certain regions.
