The difference between data recovery and drive repair is one of the main misunderstandings clients bring to us. Many people imagine the process as follows: a technician "fixes" a hard drive, it starts working again, and the homeowner can simply copy their files. In practice, these goals are contradictory: the goal of data recovery is to salvage the information, while the goal of repair is to restore the drive to working condition, and the latter is almost impossible to achieve today. Before 2008, the situation was different. Hard drives left the factory with defect detection scripts that could be read from the service area. Using process commands and special firmware—for example, Samsung's firmware was written to ROM—a repair script was launched, after which the drive was declared fit for use, sometimes with reduced capacity or with surfaces disabled. But even then, such refurbished drives didn't last long. Beginning in late 2008 and 2009, manufacturing technologies changed. Seeing their intellectual property being sold off and drives being repaired and resold, manufacturers closed this option: factory scripts were erased, Samsung stopped distributing its ROM firmware, and the drives themselves became significantly more complex. Today, even a small number of defects cannot be hidden for long—adjacent surface areas quickly fail as well. A separate, important point is why repair is incompatible with data integrity. During a full diagnostic cycle, the drive's surface is overwritten several times, erasing all information on it. This isn't done manually by a technician, but by a factory-installed script that runs automatically. This is why the request "fix the drive, and I'll copy the data myself" is unfeasible: after the repair, there will be nothing left to copy. The conclusion is simple: DIY attempts to "fix" a hard drive are pointless and often result in significant damage to the drive and reduced chances of data recovery. If the drive contains important information, it's safer to immediately contact a specialized lab for diagnostics.
