There is a detail in the oldest manuscripts of Matthew's Gospel that most modern Bibles omit: the prisoner released in place of Jesus of Nazareth was, according to these accounts, named Jesus Barabbas. Two men with the same name, facing the same crowd, and only one retained that identity in the history that has come down to us.
