"The poet Yi Sang suddenly appears between Picasso and Braque, who came from Paris. Why is that?" 100 years ago, in colonial Gyeongseong. A young poet who had never once been to Paris called himself a Cubist. ⏤ In June 2026, with the opening of the Centre Pompidou in Yeouido by Hanwha, 91 works of Cubism arrived in Korea. However, right next to it, a section featuring 21 Korean works titled 'KOREA FOCUS' was also opened. Among them stands a figure: the poet Yi Sang (1910-1937). What Cubism is, and why a young man in colonial Gyeongseong 100 years ago called himself a Cubist.
