Beervlei Dam : The Dam That Stays Empty… Until It Doesn’t

Beervlei Dam is a unique and often overlooked engineering marvel located about 30 km outside Willowmore along the N9. Unlike most dams, it was never intended for permanent water storage. Instead, Beervlei Dam was specifically designed as a flood-control system — remaining mostly empty to protect downstream farming valleys from seasonal flood damage. Construction began in 1953 and was completed in 1957. The impressive dam wall stretches 348 meters in length and stands 31 meters high. Under extreme conditions, it can hold up to 85.8 million cubic meters of water — that’s a staggering 263 billion liters.
