Painting Two Black-Headed Gulls — Watercolor & Ink Process

Today I'm painting two black-headed gulls at the water's edge. We don't have a sea where I live, but gulls turn up along the rivers too — and whether they're circling an apartment block, a lake, or the shore, anything they manage to steal vanishes into them just the same. In this video I show you how to paint them using an ink and watercolor technique — also known as line and wash. I begin by drawing the outlines in black ink — the birds, their dark wingtips, the surrounding stones and the slender water plants — letting the line stay loose and expressive. Then I build up the scene with watercolor: soft washes for the gulls' grey-and-white bodies, the warm browns of their heads, the red of the beaks and legs, and the cool greens of the water and reeds. Along the way I talk through the small decisions that bring the painting to life — where to leave the white paper, how to keep the washes fresh, and how ink and watercolor work together. I hope it inspires you to pick up a brush and try a pair of gulls of your own. #watercolor #seagulls #inkandwash #lineandwash #penandink #watercolorpainting #birdart #birds #watercolour #paintingprocess ✍️ AUTHENTICITY & TOOLS The content of this video is based on my personal experience, study, and practice.
