Today I want to talk about religion in Turkey and would like to give tips for foreigners, non-Muslims or anyone who wants to visit or live in this beautiful country. In recent videos, we have been talking about diversity in Turkey, ranging from culture to food to music. So, what religions can you expect to see if you visit? How religious is Turkey? Let's start by taking a look at some basic information about the country. Turkey is a secular state and has no official religion since the constitutional amendment in 1928 but government figures show that the 99 percent of the population is Muslim, with about 77 percent belonging to the Sunni Hanafi branch. Sunnis are the majority in Turkey today because this branch of Islam was introduced in the region during the Ottoman Empire. However, I would estimate and figures from various organizations show anywhere between 95 to 98 percent of the country practices Islam. Representatives from various other religious groups estimate their followers to be around .02 percent of the 82 million-strong population. Pew Research Center reporting and other data indicates 5 percent of Muslims in the country identify as Alevis. The Shia Jafari community estimates its members make up 4 percent of the Muslim population.
