"Sugar Dog Life" Interview with Koki Tanaka "Sugar Dog Life," starring Koki Tanaka (SUPER★DRAGON) and Tomoyoshi Tawada, is currently airing. The drama is a live-action adaptation of the popular BL manga of the same name by Yoriko, starring Tanaka, Tawada, and others, as well as Sota Uemura and Raku. The story follows Yuzumi Sakuraba (Tanaka), a college student with a baby face and short stature who excels at cooking, and Kyosuke Amasawa (Tawada), a tall, flirtatious police officer. They meet after a misguided disciplinary action and become attracted to each other over home-cooked meals. Tanaka, who has appeared in a number of dramas, including "One Room Angel" and "If You're a Family, Why Not Throw It Away?" and the film "Photo Studio of Tomorrow," spoke to us about his thoughts on the series, behind-the-scenes stories from filming, and even his otaku hobby. —Since you're co-starring in this drama, what were your thoughts when you first heard about the role? Tanaka: Of course I was happy! This is my first time playing the lead role, and I'm very grateful for the offer, so I wanted to do my best. But I was a little worried about whether I was the right person for the role, and I was also nervous because the BL genre was a completely unknown world to me. —When it's based on an original work, fans of the original work must be considerate, I'm sure. I myself love Yoriko-sensei's work. Tanaka: Really? (Happy)! The original work is so cute and heartwarming, it really warmed my heart. I thought I had to create a role that would fit the character without destroying Yuzumi's image. Of course, there are scenes that are the same as the original, so I acted while looking at the original work, being very conscious of my facial expressions and so on. —I'm sure fans of the original work will be happy about that. Were there any similarities between you and Yuzumi? Tanaka: I don't know for sure, but people always say I'm similar to Yuzumi. I've seen comments like, ``I look too much like Tanaka Kouki.'' There were times when I felt like my true self was coming out while I was acting, but I couldn't really tell if we were similar. On the contrary, I'd like to know in what ways we are similar.
