The State of Climate Journalism in 2026
Amid concerns about a backsliding of climate coverage in the press, Covering Climate Now interviewed dozens of climate reporters from around the world to assess the challenges facing reporters on the climate beat. The result is ‘A Burning House, A Quiet Media, A Silenced Majority,’ a new white paper from CCNow. In this discussion, live from the Society of Environmental Journalists convention in Chicago, CCNow co-founders Mark Hertsgaard and Kyle Pope discussed the paper’s findings with SEJ’s executive director Aparna Mukherjee and independent journalist Rachel Ramirez. Covering Climate Now is a global journalism collaboration, co-founded by Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation magazine, encouraging more and better climate coverage.
