Traders at Saba Saba market, Sumbawanga Municipality, Rukwa region, have asked the government and the Measurement Agency (WMA) to increase efforts to provide education on the correct use of legally acceptable measurements. They have insisted that the education should start from the farms where they collect products, to the street market level to ensure that every party in the trade chain has a correct understanding of the required measurements. In addition, some of them have asked the government to look into the possibility of providing a subsidy for scales so that even small traders can afford to buy scales that meet legal standards. For his part, Measurement Officer Charles Mavunde from the Measurement Agency (WMA) has explained the importance of using accurate scales, noting that this measure will add value to the business by increasing income for farmers and traders. He also stated that the education exercise will continue, with traders being given three to six months to ensure they get accurate scales before legal action is taken.
