And today I will tell you about this very topic: the so-called Pitești phenomenon. Or the Pitești experiment. Or the Pitești re-education. In fact, none of these terms can adequately and profoundly encompass what happened there. So I will call it “the violent action that took place at the Pitești prison” and I will explain it in this clip. What happened in Pitești was, without a doubt, one of the darkest chapters of humanity in the last century: several hundred young people, political prisoners with anti-communist options, ended up torturing each other, taking the torture and humiliation to a level of dehumanization that is hard to imagine. A defining chapter of Romanian communism, part of that vast repression that ravaged Romanian society. And an example of the collapse of which the human being is capable. Of the darkest and most terrifying abyss. But also of hope and courage, because, as we will see, even in the darkest universe, good still manages to shine, to throb and to save the hopeless. It is a story that deserves and must be told, and I will do it as I have done in every episode of the series Pe Vremea Tovarășilor: with sincerity and objectivity. And, in this sense, I will appeal both to the memoirs of survivors, such as Ștefan Davidescu, Nicolae Purcărea or Dumitru Bordeianu, and to the syntheses of historians, such as Alin Mureșan's volume "Pitești. Cronica unei suicideri asistate", which is probably the most comprehensive work on this topic.
