The Truth About Buying an Ex-Charter Catamaran (Nobody Says This)

If you are about to buy an ex-charter catamaran, there is one part of the transaction that almost nobody explains, and it is worth more money to you than every other piece of advice combined. It is a 30 to 90 day window called the phase-out, and it is the only period in that boat's entire life when somebody else is contractually obliged to fix things at their expense. Most buyers do not find out it exists until after it has closed. This is not another video about whether ex-charter catamarans are a good idea. This is how the transaction actually works. We cover what the charter company is genuinely required to do, using the standard published across the industry: the yacht released in sound working order allowing for fair wear and tear, with the original inventory matched item by item. We cover exactly where the line sits. Hull delamination, torn sails, cracked rigging, broken electronics, leaks, dead refrigeration and missing inventory are theirs. Flat cushion foam, furry halyards, tired varnish and crazed gelcoat are yours. And we cover the timeline that actually wins: sail the boat before phase-out, get your own independent multihull surveyor in before the work is done with a haul-out, turn that survey into the punch list, chase it weekly, and bring the surveyor back to verify before you sign the acceptance. Then the part that goes unsaid. A five to six year charter contract does not end because the boat is worn out. It ends roughly a year before a set of expensive clocks all strike at once. Saildrive diaphragms, with Yanmar recommending replacement at five years and Volvo Penta at seven, both dealer-only jobs requiring the engine to be moved forward, twice on a catamaran. Standing rigging at seven to ten tropical years. Battery banks at three to five. And the system nobody mentions, where seawater flushing plus uric acid turns your sanitation hoses into concrete, halving the internal diameter in as little as a year in warm water.
