Los millonarios locos del Congo: Los nuevos superricos de África | Historias Vivas | HD Documental
Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world and, at the same time, has one of the highest percentages of millionaires. The documentary portrays several multimillionaires: musicians, mine owners, businesspeople, and preachers of dubious reputation. The Democratic Republic of Congo is very rich in raw materials, but few benefit from them. While 60% of its inhabitants live on less than $1.25 a day, businesspeople, artists, former rebel leaders, and evangelical preachers profit from economic growth. Most of them amassed their fortunes amidst chaos. In Kinshasa, the capital, the newly rich live in secure and luxurious enclaves, while children work in the coltan mines of the east of the country. The neighborhoods of the wealthy are magnificent oases, isolated from the misery of the rest of the population. Fally Ipupa made money with music. Others try to make money with ingenious ideas. Patricia Nzolantima founded a taxi company that offers new perspectives and job opportunities, especially for women. With 3,000 employees, the mining company Cooperamma is the largest employer in Kivu province, in the northeast of the country. Robert Seninga, the CEO, claims that the management of their coltan mines is exemplary, but safety standards are deficient. This mineral, coveted worldwide (it is used to manufacture mobile phones and other electronic devices), is both a curse and a blessing for Congo. While some are getting rich, for others it means death. The region still suffers from ethnic conflicts and armed clashes between different militias. The money from coltan smuggling finances the guerrillas and fuels these conflicts, creating a vicious cycle. This documentary was produced by Ligne de Front and directed by Guillaume Dumant. It premiered in 2019. -- Living Stories is home to the most incredible documentaries from around the world. Discover remote destinations and fascinating cultures that almost no one has had access to.
