Bivacco Bailoni e Cima Marzola Sud

Marzola Hike: From the Bailoni Bivouac to 360-degree views. Geographical Location Marzola (1,738 m at the north summit, 1,736 m at the south summit) is the mountain that divides the Adige Valley from the Valsugana, in eastern Trentino. The massif extends between the municipalities of Trento, Pergine Valsugana, and Vigolo Vattaro, in the province of Trento. Despite its modest altitude, Marzola's strategic location, nestled between the Trentino basin and the upper Valsugana, makes it an exceptional vantage point overlooking the heart of the Eastern Alps. Important transport routes run along its slopes, including the Valsugana railway connecting Trento to Venice. Hike The Marzola hike, accessible in both summer and winter, is challenging due to the overall elevation gain and requires good physical fitness. The greatest difficulty lies on descent trails 438 and 440, which traverse exposed sections and feature two sections equipped with metal cables. In the presence of snow or ice, it is essential to carefully assess the safety of the descent; the prudent alternative is to return along the same route. From a scenic perspective, the Marzola offers an extraordinary 360-degree panorama that spans most of the Trentino mountain ranges. From the summit, the view encompasses the Brenta Group, the Lagorai chain, the Carè Alto, the Stivo, the Baldo Massif, the Bondone, the Vigolana Group, the Paganella, and the Pasubio. To the east, views open up over the Alta Valsugana and the Caldonazzo and Levico lakes. For those unfamiliar with the Alpine skyline, an observation point has been installed on the southern summit, equipped with orientation sights that facilitate the recognition of the surrounding peaks. The Raffaele Bailoni Bivouac, always open and unattended, has six beds on a mezzanine, a wood-burning stove, and a kitchenette. History and curiosities During the First World War, the Marzola was a crucial element in the defense system of the city of Trento. The massif was tasked with blocking any Italian advances from the Valsugana, working in synergy with the Brusaferro and Doss Fornas forts, located in the underlying Valsorda. The mountain's bulk also protected the city from potential shelling from Italian positions located in Campomolon, south of the Folgaria and Lavarone plateaus. The Raffaele Bailoni Bivouac owes its name to a tragic story. The structure was built in the early 1960s as part of the "Fanfani Law," a measure that encouraged the reforestation of the Trentino mountains through work programs. Raffaele Bailoni was one of the construction workers: he was tragically hit by his tractor while heading to the construction site. For this reason, the structure bears his name. Route From the parking lot (822 m), climb along a dirt road following trail marker 429. At the Mas del Pasolot hamlet (961 m), the dirt road turns into a trail that continues uphill through the woods. Near the Maranza Refuge, just before reaching it, there is a turnoff to the right that leads to the viewpoint over the Adige Valley. From the Maranza Refuge (1080 m), take trail marker 412 towards the Bailoni Bivouac. The trail climbs with frequent switchbacks. After about an hour and a half of walking, you reach the Bailoni Bivouac (1623 m). From the bivouac, continue on trail 412 to reach the Cima Sud della Marzola (1736 m) in about 20 minutes. The trail gradually leaves the forest and opens up onto summit meadows. Returning to the bivouac, the loop continues downhill. The route first descends to Prà Grando (1,590 m), where it joins trail 438. Next, at Prà Picol (1,390 m), trail 438 ends and trail 440, known as "Croz de le Ore," begins. This is a secured trail with two short sections with metal cables and some exposed sections, crossing ancient walkways and trenches from the Great War. Trail 440 finally returns to the starting point, completing the loop.
