The Okefenokee Swamp held a whole logging town once, back when they cut the big timber out of the Okefenokee Swamp. We landed, hiked the Big Timber ridges through the ancient pines, and came up on the ruins — machinery, foundations, the bones of a town the Okefenokee Swamp has been swallowing for a hundred years. The cemetery is the part that stays with you: people lived real lives out here in the Okefenokee Swamp — they worked, they traveled, they buried their people. We ate a swamp picnic, practiced the discipline of unclenching, and paddled out listening to what normal sounds like. You look at the remnants and you realize how hard people pushed against the Okefenokee Swamp — then you look at it now and you realize who won. Stay rugged. 📍 Expedition Chapters: 0:00 - Slowing Down in the Okefenokee Swamp 2:15 - Landing at Billy's Island 4:30 - Hiking the "Big Timber" Ridges 7:00 - Uncovering the Ghost Island Ruins 13:20 - Swamp Picnic & Learning to Unclench 16:15 - What "Normal" Sounds Like (Paddle Out) Where the map ends, the wild begins. This Okefenokee Swamp paddle walked a ghost town on Billy's Island — big timber, old graves, and ruins the Okefenokee Swamp took back. That is the Okefenokee Swamp.
