Karen Carpenter (Carpenters) - I Need To Be In Love
Karen Carpenter performing ‘I Need to Be in Love’ on ‘Bruce Forsyth’s Big Night’, broadcast on ITV on 24th December 1978. ‘I Need to Be in Love’, released as a single on 21st May 1976 and on the album ‘A Kind of Hush’ on 11th June 1976, was the Carpenters’ fourteenth number-one single on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Karen said, ‘for quite a few years, it’s been my favourite.’ Richard Carpenter was absent in this performance. ‘Two days before we were going to come over, he caught himself a real nice case of the flu,’ Karen explained. ‘So he’s flat on his back in Los Angeles, and he’s really upset that he couldn’t come.’ In fact, Richard’s absence was due to his Quaaludes addiction. Jeff Wesley was filling in for Richard on keyboards. In this show, Karen also performed ‘Please Mr. Postman’, ‘Merry Christmas, Darling’ and a duet of Christmas songs with Bruce Forsyth.
