CRECCOM Corner - Episode 17

This week’s edition of CRECCOM Corner on MBC TV and Radio 1 took us to Sub Traditional Authority Nkutumula in Ntcheu District, where we engaged with the Msangalabwi Youth Club under the Green Jobs for Adolescents and Youth Project. The project is implemented by a consortium comprising Save the Children Malawi, CRECCOM, ADRA Malawi, Emerge Livelihoods, Teveta Malawi and Mzuzu University with funding from Save the Children Italia. At the heart of the feature is the club’s innovative work in producing briquettes; an eco-friendly alternative to charcoal and firewood. The youth are making briquettes using locally available waste materials such as agricultural residues, helping to reduce deforestation while providing a sustainable source of income. The process involves collecting and carbonizing the materials, grinding them into fine particles, mixing with a binding agent, and compressing the mixture into briquettes for drying and use. Through this initiative, the youth are not only generating income but also contributing to environmental conservation and promoting clean energy solutions within their community.
