Alcoholism And Schizophrenia Have Their Darkest Days. | SoberNotSober Ep.44

Mekaylay and Grant are back for their most vulnerable episode yet — and somehow also one of the most unhinged. They kick things off by choosing THIS podcast over a presidential address (their words), before diving into real talk about the broken American healthcare system — specifically the infuriating red tape that disabled people face just to get the basic equipment they need to live. Then things get personal. Mekaylay opens up about the night his dad had a massive stroke on his 60th birthday, the race to the hospital, being told by a nurse that he had "five strikes" and was basically already dead — and how he handled all of it the only way she knew how at 19: by drinking. Grant shares his own story of finding out he had schizoaffective disorder by accidentally seeing it on a computer screen at a mental health facility, and what it was like navigating that diagnosis as a kid who'd already lost his best friend to cancer and his grandfather in the same year. In between the heavy stuff, they talk about: the "you're the screen, not the movie" philosophy they actually use to manage anxiety and depression, why they started this podcast in the first place, and why negative comments on the internet say more about the commenter than the creator. Then somehow the episode pivots to even more traumatic life moments — Mekaylay watched a man die at the Grand Canyon (complete with a sudden hailstorm the moment he turned purple), and Grant rode along with his girlfriend's firefighter dad at age 12 to watch a guy get confirmed dead in a hospital elevator... and then come back. They close it out with an Am I the A**hole about a woman unknowingly exposing her b***hole in a hot Pilates class, which leads to a surprisingly nuanced ethical debate and too many creative synonyms for the human rear end. Real, raw, and ridiculous — exactly as intended. 📬 Submit your ghost stories, cryptid sightings, or anything scary: [email protected] 🎙️ Follow everywhere: @sobernotsoberpod
