Any sill replacement ultimately involves a bloody battle with rust. Otherwise, why replace the sills if they haven't rotted? And a clear sign that they've rotted is massive traces of rust on the surface, followed by metal destruction. So, what was I talking about? Oh, right, about corrosion. So, after opening the decorative section of the sill, the first thing anyone encounters is usually massive deposits of rust. The most important thing they're thinking about is the condition of the insides, specifically the reinforcement. Sometimes a miracle happens, and the reinforcement remains virtually untouched by corrosion, but sometimes there's little left, and then you have to fabricate it yourself or weld in a new one. In our case, the reinforcement was 90% intact; we only welded it back on. We also cleaned away any traces of corrosion and treated the entire surface with acid.
