In today's travel vlog, we journey to the lush green island of Ikaria, specifically to the Pigi region near Evdilos, to visit one of the most mystical and soul-stirring Christian monuments in the Aegean Sea: the Holy Monastery of Saint Theoktisti of Lesvos and the famous cave chapel of Theoskepasti. The Monastery was built during the 14th century (around 1360) and initially functioned as a coenobic monastery, whereas today it serves as a hermitage. The Catholicon of the monastery is a beautiful barrel-vaulted church featuring significant, though time-worn, frescoes depicting the figure of the Saint, as well as scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The Discovery of the Holy Relics & Theoskepasti The history of the monastery is inextricably linked to the small cave and the chapel of Theoskepasti. According to tradition, during construction works, the holy relics of Saint Theoktisti were accidentally discovered inside the hidden cave, emitting an indescribable holy fragrance. Just a few steps away, underneath a massive, hanging granite rock that seems to balance by a miracle, lies the chapel of Theoskepasti. Its interior is carved directly into the stone, housing the old wooden iconostasis (dating back to 1894), inspiring awe in every visitor. Life of Saint Theoktisti Saint Theoktisti was born in Methymna, Lesbos, in the 9th century. At just 18 years old, during a raid by Saracen pirates on the island, she was captured. When the pirates landed on the then-deserted island of Paros, the young Theoktisti managed to escape and hide in the island's dense forests. She lived there completely alone for 35 whole years, inside the historic church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani and the surrounding nature, surviving only on wild herbs (lupins) and dedicated to unceasing prayer. She fell asleep in the Lord in peace, and her memory is honored on November 9th.
