Without effective public policies, many migrated to the outskirts of cities, giving rise to the first favelas (shanty towns). The free labor force began to be replaced by European immigrants, especially Italians and Germans, who were encouraged to come to Brazil. This immigration had a significant impact on the formation of the working class and the country's economy. Politically, abolition weakened the monarchy, contributing to the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889.
