A Widow Was Losing Her Ranch Beside John Wayne's Alamo Set In 1959 — Then He Paid The Whole Note

September 1959. In the brush country of Kinney County, Texas, west of the small town of Brackettville, a widow named Nora Hadley stood in her own front yard and watched her ranch go up for public auction. Forty miles east, on J.T. "Happy" Shahan's ranch, John Wayne was building the Alamo out of adobe and lumber for the picture that would nearly cost him his fortune. Nora's husband Sam had signed a note against the land before his heart gave out in the saddle. Three years later the bank called it due. On the second Tuesday of September the deed was cried on the courthouse steps, and a land speculator from San Antonio came to take four hundred and twenty acres for a song — bidding below the note itself, in front of a crowd of neighbors who would not bid against a widow. Nobody in that crowd could stop him. Then a voice came from the back of the square. John Wayne, leaning against a dusty car, never stood up straight to do it — he simply outbid the speculator to fifteen thousand dollars on a ranch worth eight, paid the whole sum in cash on a wooden table in the sun, cleared the note, and ordered the deed drawn in Nora Hadley's name before he left the county. He never gave his name. Years later the canceled note, stamped PAID IN FULL, still hung framed on the Hadley kitchen wall beside a 1959 photograph of a sunburned boy and a tall man in a Stetson, building a wall together. The widow kept the ranch the rest of her life. The Alamo Village he built still stands. #JohnWayne #TheDuke #ClassicHollywood #TheAlamo #WesternHistory #OldHollywood #AmericanLegend #Brackettville #TexasHistory #VintageHollywood #TrueStory #GreatestGeneration #WWIIveteran #Western #Cowboys
