Seneca Nation Health System - 50th Anniversary Video

April 1st, 2026 marked the 50th anniversary of the Seneca Nation Health System! The Seneca Nation Health System was community-born, and much of its success is attributable to this fact. As recently as the 1970s, health care was hit or miss among the Seneca population. On the Allegany Territory, the New York State Department of Health provided limited health services, only 3 hours per week. On the Cattaraugus Territory, the former Thomas Indian School Infirmary housed a small health care facility. There, the New York State Department of Health and the Erie County Department of Health held limited clinic hours of only 5 hours per week, mainly to treat Senecas under age 21 and provide immunizations. This situation was gravely inadequate, and through community action and efforts from leadership, the push for healthcare in our communities was strengthened. Beginning March 22, 1976, the IHS was able to process funds for the Seneca health program which was started April 1 of that year. In his testimony, Robert C. Hoag asked Congress to act favorably to assist in "raising the health status of the Senecas to the highest possible level." In honor of this milestone, Clayton Fulton, Indian Health Service (IHS) Chief of Staff, has this to say: "On behalf of the Indian Health Service, I extend congratulations and join in celebrating the Seneca Nation Health System’s 50th Anniversary—a truly impressive achievement. We commend the early leadership from the esteemed William Millar, James Meredith, and Dr. Emory Johnson who took extraordinary measures to ensure that citizens of the Seneca Nation have access to the health care they deserved. "So let us congratulate you on 50 years of determination to fulfill a sacred trust: to raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of your community to the highest possible level. This moment is both a celebration and a renewed commitment; to carry forward the vision of those who came before us with boldness and humility. As we look ahead to the next 50 years, may the strength of our partnership and the hope that unites us together remain steadfast as you continue your remarkable journey. It is a path that honors our commitments and cares for our relatives for generations to come."
