In this video, we explore one of the most radical and bloody phases of the French Revolution: the rise of Robespierre, the Period of Terror (1793–1794), and the brutal War in the Vendée, an internal insurrection that pitted French against French. Liberty, equality… and a mountain of heads. After the fall of the monarchy in 1792 and the execution of Louis XVI in January 1793, France declared itself a Republic, but it too descended into chaos. The external war against the European powers was compounded by internal conflicts: hunger, inflation, political radicalization, and growing distrust among revolutionaries. The Jacobins, led by Robespierre, took control of the National Convention and established the Committee of Public Safety, an emergency government to "save the Revolution." The result? The Terror: revolutionary tribunals, blacklists, denunciations, and the guillotine for anyone deemed an "enemy of the people," from moderate Girondins to former allies. Neither Danton nor Desmoulins escaped. Nor did Marie Antoinette. Meanwhile, in western France, the War of the Vendée broke out, a royalist and Catholic rebellion against the new regime. Local peasants and nobles rose up in arms against the republic and were crushed with extreme violence: mass executions, villages burned, and brutal reprisals that many consider a proto-republican genocide. Robespierre, obsessed with virtue and revolutionary purity, was eventually devoured by his own logic: in July 1794, he was arrested and guillotined without trial. The leader of the Terror fell… and a new, more moderate era began: the Directory.
