Born into one of India’s most privileged families, she was the daughter of a legendary actress, the daughter-in-law of a royal dynasty, a highly educated scholar, a bold actress, and a formidable politician. Born on March 28, 1954, in Kolkata, Moon Moon Sen, originally named Srimati Sen, was the daughter of the wealthy industrialist Dibanath Sen and the iconic Bengali actress Suchitra Sen. Despite her mother's wish for her to stay away from the film industry, Moon Moon excelled in academics, attending Loreto Convent and Loreto House before earning her master’s degree from Jadavpur University. She was a woman of many talents, teaching English, learning graphics, and even painting under the guidance of the renowned artist Jamini Roy. Her life took a turn when she married Bharat Dev Varma, a member of Tripura's royal family, in 1978. This marriage connected her to the royal families of Cooch Behar and Jaipur, as her mother-in-law was the sister of Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur. After her marriage and the birth of her two daughters, Raima and Riya Sen, Moon Moon surprised everyone by making her Bollywood debut in the 1984 film "Andar Baahar," against her mother's wishes. This rebellious act caused a rift between them, but Suchitra Sen eventually came to support her daughter's choices. Moon Moon's bold on-screen persona, especially her willingness to wear a bikini and short dresses, created a stir in the conservative 1980s, establishing her as a fearless and outspoken artist. Her career was not limited to Hindi cinema; she also starred in Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu films. Her versatile acting earned her a Nandi Award for the Telugu film "Sirivennela." Beyond her film career, Moon Moon Sen entered politics, winning a seat in the Lok Sabha from Bankura in 2014 as a member of the Trinamool Congress. Moon Moon’s life was also marked by controversies, including her infamous photoshoot with Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan and her candid statements that often went against her party's stance. Despite her public persona, she was a deeply religious and family-oriented woman. Today, Moon Moon Sen continues to live life on her own terms, often seen at social events and even modeling with her daughters.
