While walking, he unknowingly arrived at one of the holiest places in India, the sacred confluence of the Yamuna, Ganga, and Saraswati, where the Kumbh Mela takes place. Overwhelmed with joy and reverence, he eagerly stepped into the Ganga for a holy dip. But the river’s current was fierce. It swept him away and pushed him toward a seemingly quiet corner of land. Still smiling, he thought, “What a peaceful place to meditate.” But the moment his feet touched the sand, panic set in. The ground beneath him began pulling him in, it was quicksand. He fought back with everything he had. He struggled, resisted, clutched at whatever he could find. But the more he fought, the deeper he sank. Exhausted, dehydrated, under the scorching summer heat, what felt like 110 degrees, his strength gave way. At one point, he stopped resisting. He relaxed. And something extraordinary happened. The sand stopped pulling him in. The more he let go, the more the situation eased. It felt as though the quicksand was feeding on his fear, and the moment fear disappeared, the struggle lost its power. Using this brief window, Radhanath Swami slowly crawled his way back into the Ganga. But the ordeal wasn’t over. The river’s current was relentless. Despite his best attempts, armed only with a determined dog paddle, he couldn’t make it across. The Ganga refused to yield. At that moment, he was faced with two stark choices: drown in the river, or be dragged back into the quicksand. What saved him in that moment? Where did the strength come from?
