Below, the towpath cuts into the cliff, a reminder of the barges. Rocamadour then reveals itself: sanctuaries leaning against the rock, the Chapel of Saint-Michel, the Black Virgin, and tales of miracles that have made this place one of Europe's most important pilgrimages. At dawn, Cordes-sur-Ciel emerges from the mists: Gothic merchants' houses, steep alleys, flags of the Counts of Toulouse, and the sweetness of an almond brittle. Head east to Saint-Énimie, pearl of the Gorges du Tarn: translucent water, canoeing, cliff paths, and the legend of the Merovingian princess. Further south, Villefranche-de-Conflent unfolds its medieval ramparts reinforced by Vauban; an underground staircase leads to Fort Libéria, a belvedere overlooking Mount Canigou. The finale is Castelnou: market, ochre alleys, and a castle set in a Catalan setting, all the way to the shared cargolade.
