Before The Hunt for Gollum even reaches theaters, it's already at the center of a heated online debate. Lord of the Rings director Andy Serkis has ignited one of Hollywood's biggest casting debates after explaining why The Hunt for Gollum won't embrace what he described as "politically correct just-casting-for-the-sake-of-casting-and-ticking-boxes." In an interview, Serkis acknowledged that the franchise has faced criticism over its predominantly white casts, but said his upcoming film would only make casting choices "where relevant" rather than to satisfy quotas. He also explained that Tolkien's world was heavily influenced by Norse mythology, describing the Shire as intentionally insular within Middle-earth.
