We’ve Been Looking for ARMAGEDDON in the Wrong Place

What if nearly every map of Armageddon points to the wrong place? For generations, Christians have been taught that the final battle will take place at Megiddo in northern Israel. But Revelation says the name is Hebrew, and the rest of Scripture repeatedly gathers the nations—not against Megiddo—but against Jerusalem. In this teaching, Dr. Douglas Hamp examines the surprising meaning behind Armageddon and proposes that the word may preserve three Hebrew elements: Arema — harvested sheaves Gei — a narrow valley, gorge, or canyon Don/Dan — intense judgment Together, they point toward the imagery of harvested sheaves gathered in a valley of judgment—language that closely parallels Joel’s Valley of Jehoshaphat, the harvest, the sickle, and the winepress outside Jerusalem. But there is another major clue: this valley may not exist yet. Zechariah 14 describes Messiah standing on the Mount of Olives and the mountain splitting apart, forming a new east-to-west valley. This newly created gorge would intersect the Kidron Valley and become the escape route for the remnant of Jerusalem—and the trap into which the armies of the Beast pursue them. This is the Exodus pattern repeated on an even greater scale: God once rescued His people through walls of water. At Armageddon, He may rescue them through walls of rock.
