Shared Professional Decision-Making and Local Accreditation at University College London Hospitals

University College London Hospitals (UCLH) have established an Exemplar Ward programme that is designed to support clinical teams to implement standard processes, reduce unwarranted variation and deliver local quality improvement initiatives in their wards and departments. This film highlights how Exemplar Ward has developed, showing how the data has evolved to be even more real time and based on all the patients cared for, moving away from audit freeing time for nurse leaders to act on results instead of data collection. It also showcases the improvement work outcomes, shared professional decision-making approaches and developments in the Trust due to digital systems implementation. Please note this film was created prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nursing, midwifery and care staff as part of their everyday practice are well-placed to identify opportunities for transformational change that will support delivery of better outcomes and experiences of those who use our services. We have seen this during the Covid—19 pandemic. as nurses and midwives drive forwards change and lead innovation; benefiting both those they care for, and work with. To support this, local accreditation provides us with the tools to undertake a comprehensive assessment of quality of care at ward, unit and team levels. It does this by bringing together key measures into a single overarching framework, from across nursing and clinical care as relevant to us and to our patients. Experience shows accreditation programmes can drive continuous improvement in patient outcomes, as well as increase patient satisfaction and staff experience at ward and unit level. During the Covid-19 pandemic, this collective sense of purpose has been especially important as it supports communication, encourages local ownership and supports teams to achieve a robust programme which measures and influences care delivery.
