Yugoslavia, historia de un fracaso
The end of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles brought about many changes to the map of Europe. One of these was the creation from scratch of a new state that had never existed before: the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. It was built from remnants of the defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire, centered around the former Kingdom of Serbia, a state born at the end of the 19th century as the Ottoman Empire was disintegrating on the European continent. The creation of this new monarchy, the direct heir to that of Serbia, was a true historical milestone, as it was the first time that the South Slavic peoples had formed a sovereign state. Peter I of Serbia, a soldier-king who had personally fought in the war against the Central Powers, was its first monarch. But to exist as an independent state, they needed international recognition. That recognition came four years later, in 1922. The name of the state was too long and difficult to pronounce, so a few years later, with Alexander I on the throne, the country changed its official name to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, a newly coined term meaning "land of the South Slavs." The political life of this kingdom was brief and turbulent. The king was assassinated, and a few years later, in 1941, the Germans and Italians invaded. As had happened a quarter of a century earlier, the Yugoslavs found themselves embroiled in a global conflict. The invaders dismembered the country, creating a separate Croatian state, which led to a civil war that saw three Yugoslav governments: one controlled by the Germans, another with British and American support, and yet another formed by partisans who received aid from the Soviet Union. After the end of the war, Yugoslavia was reborn and even expanded territorially. The Allies handed over the Trieste peninsula and part of Venezia Giulia, which had previously been part of Italy. The monarch, Peter II, did not return; he went into exile in the United States, where he died many years later. In his place, a people's republic was created: the Federal Democratic Yugoslavia, ruled with an iron fist by a former Croatian partisan named Josip Broz, though he was known simply as Tito. The new Yugoslavia consisted of six republics that enjoyed a degree of self-government: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Montenegro. During the first postwar years, it was a success story. Tito distanced himself from Stalin's Soviet Union and maintained good relations with the West. He became a very popular and influential figure worldwide. Tito's death in 1980 coincided with a severe economic crisis that quickly spilled over into the political arena. Nationalism and ethnic conflicts resurfaced. The republic became ungovernable. The arrival of Perestroika and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 exacerbated internal problems, and Yugoslavia disintegrated. Slovenia and Croatia proposed transforming it into a confederation, but no agreement was reached because the Serbs refused. A few months later, in June 1991, war broke out in Slovenia, the first in a series of localized conflicts in the different republics that would last for a decade. Yugoslavia, which had been born after a world war that began in the Balkans, disappeared after a prolonged and bloody civil war, giving rise to a collection of seven independent states.
