Chasing Trains NSW | Ardglen Bank, Hunter Valley Coal & Southern Highlands

Three days chasing trains across New South Wales — from the North Coast at Wauchope to the Hunter Valley coal network, over Ardglen Bank, and down through the Southern Highlands to Junee. This was a flexible, on-the-fly trip that delivered serious variety. Highlights include heavy haul coal over the 1 in 40 Ardglen grade with bankers working hard, Pacific National 93 class returning from NCIG, Aurizon push-pull banking sets, Whitehaven WH class units, TT class coal power including recently patched ex-QUBE locomotives, XPT services on the Main North and Main South, Qube steel from Port Kembla, and Lachlan Valley Railway 47 class locomotives at Goulburn. Locations featured: Hexham, Wauchope, Werris Creek, Ardglen, Singleton, Lochinvar, Sandgate, Werai, Bundanoon, Marulan, Goulburn, Binalong, Cootamundra and Junee. From five locomotives attacking the bank to classic Alcos on grain and modern AC heavy haul power, this trip covered a broad cross section of NSW mainline operations. I’ll be back to spend more time around Werris Creek and Ardglen — there’s plenty more to see.
