While Ghana entered the game as slight favorites due to their individual talent, the perennial World Cup participant was in dire straits before the tournament: missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations, going six games without a win, and the dismissal of coach Otto Addo in March following a friendly defeat against Germany. Goalkeeper Ati Zigi made a crucial save to deny the "Canaleros'" first dangerous shot from Waterman. Ghana's attacking performance was a complete disappointment. Until the first water break, little happened in the pouring rain in Toronto. Panama controlled the game but struggled to create anything meaningful with their possession. Ghana noticeably missed the spark of play from Partey, the midfield strategist and creative force. There were no clear-cut chances for either side, and the game drifted along until the 34th minute when there was a brief moment of excitement when Martinez went down in the box under a challenge from Opoku. However, it wasn't enough to warrant a penalty. Nevertheless, Ghana could be happier with the draw at halftime than their opponents. The "Black Stars" were particularly disappointing in attack during the first 45 minutes, failing to register a single shot on goal. To make matters worse, goalkeeper Ati Zigi had to be substituted due to injury at halftime. The four-time African champions improved their performance and came out of the locker room with more energy. In the 48th minute, they finally created a dangerous opportunity, but Wolfsburg's Adjetey header landed directly in Mosquera's arms. Panama also remained inaccurate in front of goal. However, Panama continued to have the better overall game plan and were more determined in challenges. Their only weakness was in the final third, where they either overcomplicated their play or lacked precision. This was also the case just before the hour mark when Martinez came very close to scoring the opening goal, but his shot from the right side of the penalty area was crucially forced wide, and he only found the side netting. Ghana managed to make the game more balanced and had the best chance of the match so far after 65 minutes: Panama's Ramos slid in to clear a low cross just in time, ahead of Asante, and put it out for a throw-in. Shortly afterward, the center-back was again in the spotlight, but his long-range effort at the other end went just wide of the left post. Ghana were fortunate that a foul by Yirenkyi on Cordoba in the penalty area went unpunished. VAR also failed to intervene, even though Yirenkyi had clearly thrown his opponent off balance. Yirenkyi finally relieves Ghana's pressure late in the game. The balance of power gradually shifted. Ghana was now able to apply significantly more pressure and came ever closer to taking the lead. Adjetey's shot from a pinpoint Ayew free-kick went just wide of the left post (73'). Panama, on the other hand, struggled increasingly as the game wore on and made life difficult for themselves with several turnovers. Nevertheless, they managed to successfully repel the opposition's attacks for a long time. Only deep into stoppage time, when a goalless draw seemed inevitable, did Ghana finally strike: The impressive Asante beat Cordoba on the left, kept his composure, and played a low cross into the middle, where Yirenkyi tapped the ball over the line.
