The weight of a gravity retaining wall resists this moment. Bearing capacity – The weight of the wall and earth is supported by the ground beneath. The ground bearing capacity needs to be checked to ensure any settlement is within limits. Sliding – The retaining earth creates a horizontal force that can cause the retaining wall to slide. This is resisted by the friction between the wall and earth beneath, and the embedment of the wall. Stability – The earth around the wall requires adequate strength to avoid an overall slip failure. Shear – The blocks can shear at the base or on courses. We introduce a kicker at the base and interlocking buttons to resist these forces. Gravity retaining walls use the mass of the blocks to retain the earth and to prevent sliding, shear and overturning Inclined retaining walls act much the same as gravity retaining walls except the incline improves performance and a little less mass can be used Reinforced block retaining walls uses the cantilever of the foundation raft that is connected to the wall. This is the best performing retaining wall as less blocks are required. The design tables give the width, depth and reinforcement required for the foundations This allows detailed drawing to be prepared for the design and construction of the wall The tables can be used as a guide only as they assume a ground bearing capacity of 200 Kn/m2 We can design retaining walls for you on request The cost index in the table can be used for a guide to cost each wall type. This is useful to decide which is the best wall to use and gives you information for your budget. Cost Index = 60 for the 3m high reinforced block wall The 60 represent £60,000 to build 100 linear meters of wall The wall height is 3m The total area of wall = 100 x 3 = 300m2 The cost of the wall per m2 = £60,000 / 300 = £200 m2 The cost includes : The blocks The delivery of the blocks to site The cost of the foundation including formwork, concrete and reinforcement Site installation of the blocks, reinforcement and grout. The cost excludes any earthworks or preliminary costs for site conditions The blocks are 600 mm wide x 600mm high and come in 5 lengths. 1800, 1500, 1200, 900,and 600mm They are used for: Gravity retaining walls Inclined retaining wall Piling matts Temporary works Material bays Contact information Website: http://www.retainingwallsolutions.co.uk/ Phone 07896 246 224
