After a year and a half of ownership, and not long after repairing the infamous engine valley coolant leak, the Cayenne had been running beautifully. Then on the way to a New Year’s Eve family gathering, disaster struck. While cruising along normally, there was a loud bang, a harsh shudder through the car, and the engine suddenly lost power before stalling completely while still moving. With no realistic chance of recovery on New Year’s Eve, I ended up limping the car home at barely 30mph in full limp mode, convinced something serious had happened. The engine was idling horribly, had almost no power, and genuinely felt like it was only running on three cylinders. What followed turned into a surprisingly confusing diagnosis process. Initially I became convinced the problem had to be something affecting an entire bank of cylinders rather than a single injector. Research into common faults on these 3.0 V6 TDI engines led me down the rabbit hole of ECU failures and wiring problems, especially the well known water ingress issues that affect some of these cars. After checking the wiring and spending far too long convincing myself the ECU had failed, I eventually called in an auto electrician to properly test the system. Embarrassingly, after all the speculation and overthinking, the fault turned out to be exactly what I first suspected in the beginning: a single failed injector on cylinder 2. From there, this video becomes a full DIY guide covering the injector replacement process step by step. I show: • Accessing the injectors on the 3.0 TDI V6 • Removing the failed injector • Cleaning and preparing the injector bore • Fitting the replacement Bosch injector • Replacing seals and hardware • Correct tightening and reassembly • Coding the new injector to the ECU using a Launch diagnostic tool • Final startup and testing I also include an important warning regarding piezo injectors and why unplugging them while the engine is running can potentially cause catastrophic engine damage if done incorrectly. The 3.0 V6 TDI engine fitted to the Porsche Cayenne 958 is shared with a huge number of other VAG vehicles including the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg, so hopefully this guide will be useful to owners of those vehicles too. Thankfully, after replacing and coding the injector, the Cayenne is now running perfectly again and has been faultless for weeks since the repair.
