Portulacaria Afra 'Elephant Bush' are very low maintenance, easy succulent plants to grow and propagate. In this video I will show you how to repot a Portulacaria Afra 'Elephant Bush' that has grown quite large and has not been repotted for over four years. Although you don't need to do it often, repotting your succulent plants is necessary to replenish nutrients lost from watering over the years. This plant is turning yellow from lack of nutrients in the soil. Since I don't fertilize or feed my succulents regularly, I decided to repot this plant in fresh potting soil to help enliven the plant and keep it happy for years. Steps To Repotting a Large Portulacaria Afra ‘Elephant Bush’ Plant 1. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current pot it's in. A few inches larger in diameter and in height should be good enough. 2. Prepare a well-draining potting mix. I like using cactus mix and perlite combined. 3. To remove a plant that has become pot-bound, place the plant on its side and loosen from the pot by lightly squeezing the sides of the pot. In this case I am gently stepping on the sides of the pot to help loosen the plant from the side. A dry plant is easier to pull out than a wet one. 4. Once loose, the plant should slide out of the pot easily. 5. Remove some of the old soil and loosen the root ball at the bottom. 6. Place some potting mix in the pot. Make sure to leave room for the plant to fit in. Pack the soil along the side of the pot to leave some room for the plant. 7. Put the plant in the pot. 8. Pour some soil in the surrounding areas and fill in any spaces and gaps. 9. Keep adding more soil until all empty spaces are filled. Pack the soil in around the plant. 10. Water thoroughly and do not water again until the soil is dry. This plant can stay in this pot for a few years before it needs to be repotted again. 11. When repotting, you will see some fallen leaves and stems. You can stick these in the soil and some of them will root and propagate on their own.
