On Leo Brouwer: Ricardo Cobo, Louis Trépanier, Philip Candelaria, Christopher Stell, Raphaella Smits, Mark Eden and René Izquierdo talk with Benjamin Verdery in a pre-concert lecture. Recorded April 23, 2011 at 92nd Street Y. On April 23, 2011, ten guitarists from six countries gathered on the 92Y stage to honor an icon of the guitar world, Cuban guitarist/composer/conductor Leo Brouwer, with a full evening of his music. Seven of the performers—onstage, from left, René Izquierdo, Mark Eden (Eden–Stell Guitar Duo), Raphaela Smits, Philip Candelaria (Canadian Guitar Quartet), Christopher Stell (Eden–Stell), Louis Trépanier (CGQ) and Ricardo Cobo—join host Benjamin Verdery before the concert to offer personal tributes to Brouwer and describe his influence on their lives and art. They talk about his compositions, swap favorite stories about Brouwer, and discuss his teaching and performing styles.
