They call themselves "cockroaches" because of a comment made by India's Chief Justice two months ago at a hearing. He essentially said that some young people, lacking education and ability, were like a group of "cockroaches." This statement sparked outrage among young Indians. And then, the most hilarious thing happened. An Indian youth named Deepk registered a social media account called the "Cockroach BJP" and jokingly asked: "What if all the cockroaches united?" This single question caused the account's followers to skyrocket, currently boasting over 25 million followers on Instagram, far surpassing Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) account. At this point, it was no longer a joke but a movement. First, it's worth noting that the Indian youth who launched the movement graduated from Boston University, demonstrating his exceptional skill in communication. The normal logic is: if you call me a "cockroach," I'll argue with you and fight back. But they did the opposite, choosing to accept it calmly. You say I'm a "cockroach"? Fine, then I am a "cockroach," and we are thousands upon thousands of "cockroaches." We'll imitate Modi's BJP, create a "Cockroach BJP," and capitalize on this massive surge in online traffic. The name is a joke, but the anger is real. Of course, no matter how funny the name, without genuine resentment, it won't gain traction. The "Cockroach Bharatiya Janata Party" (CJP) took to the streets this week in response to an entrance exam for undergraduate medical school in India. In India, becoming a doctor is a lifeline for countless ordinary families, a path to upward social mobility. Especially for a child from a lower caste, getting into medical school represents the hope of the entire village. And what happened? The exam was leaked. The questions circulated on social media, available for purchase. Then the authorities said, "Then everyone should retake the exam." That's easy to say. Everyone has taken exams before, right? Exhausted from studying, and then you tell me to take it again? It's devastating. Afterwards, more than 20 young people couldn't bear the pressure and committed suicide. Moreover, exam leaks are nothing new in India. Medical school entrance exams, police exams, teacher exams—they're all leaked. Problems keep arising, but no one takes responsibility. This blatant corruption and shady dealings have ignited the anger of young people. So the "Cockroach Movement" took to the streets, demanding the resignation of the Minister of Education. However, they were met with batons and tear gas. The Confidence of a Great Power vs. the Power of "Cockroaches": On the surface, this protest is about exams, but in reality, I think these young people who call themselves "cockroaches" are attacking a corrupt education system and long-standing class stratification. In other words, the true underlying theme of this movement is the collective despair of a large number of underprivileged youth in India. India has 1.46 billion people, and its population structure is very young, with over 700 million under the age of 35. To put that into perspective, the entire population of Europe combined is roughly that many. So many young people need to work, live, and build their futures. But the reality is that the unemployment rate for Indian youth aged 15 to 25 is close to 40%. Every year, approximately 12 million new workers are added to the workforce, but there aren't that many regular, stable jobs; only a few million are added annually. Exams become one of their few remaining options. And this path, however, is rife with corruption and cheating. Students study desperately, but the exams themselves are rigged—how can they change their fate? What's even more disheartening is the arrogance of the elites. India claims to be the "largest democracy," but its caste system is deeply ingrained. Although legally abolished, it lives on in spirit. This class barrier is peculiar globally.
