The Beetle convertible is a fun and quirky drop-to that is actually surprisingly practical to own. This is because the Beetle is based on a VW Golf, which is no bad thing. It may look retro but this is a thoroughly modern car which shares the Golfs legendary reliability and frugal 1.6 litre engine. Performance is excellent and economy is also impressive, averaging 36mpg overall and 40mpg on the motorway. The ride comfort is excellent and there is VW's superb stability and traction control which aids the handling and stability. Despite the relatively small engine, I found the 1.6 model to be a lively performer with good acceleration through the gears and barely any noise intrusion. All the controls feel precise and well engineered - This thing feels as though it has been built to last. I would personally recommend the 1.6 version of this car - In my opinion it offers the best combination of performance and economy of all the petrol models and , unlike the Diesel version our 1.6 Luna is ULEZ compliant. On all road surfaces I found the Beetle to ride very well. The suspension seems to soak up any road imperfections up with ease, and all the seats are comfortable yet supportive.
