Daughter of woman murdered by her ex-husband in Shropshire shares their story | West Mercia Police

In January 2018, Cheryl Gabriel‑Hooper was shot and killed outside her home in Newport, Shropshire, by her estranged husband, Andrew 'Jack' Hooper. Cheryl had been out with friends at a nearby pub the evening of her murder, and as she returned home collected her 14-year-old daughter Georgia, from her parent's house. As they pulled up onto the drive they noticed Hooper was waiting for them, before he approached the car with a shotgun, and shooting Cheryl as she sat in the drivers seat. Sadly, Cheryl was pronounced dead at the scene. After fatally wounding her, Hooper fled the scene before turning the gun on himself, shooting himself in the face causing significant facial injuries. Hooper was later charged with Cheryl’s murder, and the attack was described in court as premeditated violence driven by anger and jealousy. In June 2019, a jury found him guilty of her murder and Hooper received a life sentence with a minimum term of 31 years. Cheryl’s death devastated her family, and Georgia has since channelled that loss into advocacy for domestic abuse awareness. Through sharing her mother’s story, she aims to help other women recognise the signs of abuse, feel empowered to seek help, and understand that abusive behaviour is never acceptable.
