Flint Knapping Stone Tools
http://www.RootsVT.com This is video from the Roots School Flint Knapping course in Central Vermont. The first evidence of human beings using rock tools is between two and three million years ago. Over such a long time the process of tool making has advanced from simple sharp edges and choppers to an art form of complexity and beauty. The flint knapping class begins by looking into how rocks break and which ones will provide the best tools. We cover the two main methods of shaping in flint knapping, direct percussion and pressure flaking, and briefly look at indirect percussion . Tools and materials are provided as we work on spalling, preforming, finishing and sharpening stone arrowheads and knives. Hand axes and large projectile points are also be demonstrated and taught. Flint knapping is a primitive skill that predates Homo sapiens, and has helped to develop our minds, cultures, and lives. Good materials and tools included as well as meals and a warm place to sleep. All the points and knives are made by head instructor Brad Salon.
