Seles, who's from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, debuted on Court Central in the third round by waving to the crowd as she entered the stadium and throwing flowers into the stands. When Seles attempted to present a bouquet to her opponent, fourth-seeded Zina Garrison, and Garrison refused it, the spectators booed Garrison. "It's a bunch of hype," said Garrison after being blown away 6-3, 6-2. "She's just another baseliner." And Madonna is just another Pepsi-Cola ad. Seles, ranked No. 22 worldwide, originally said she didn't think she gave Graf a scare. But she changed her answer moments later saying, 'Well, maybe a little.' At 5-feet-8 and 108 pounds, Seles has the shots of a double-barreled shotgun. She was the the first player during the two-week event to extend Graf to three sets on the red clay of Roland Garros. She already knows the parts of her game that need to be worked on for another possible encounter with Graf. 'It doesn't matter that I lost.' said the blonde-haired Seles, who was facing Graf for the first time ever while also playing her maiden Grand Slam event. 'I would have been happy to win the match,' said the spirited Yugoslavian phenom, who has been working out in Florida as one of Nick Bollettieri's prized pupils. 'But I'm happy with my play.' Of course, that was before Seles's physical resiliency, hitting power, competitive zest and tactical precocity took Graf to the brink in their semifinal, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory for Graf... and at once it was clear that if a player is sufficiently quick and irrepressible enough to keep hanging in and slugging it out with Graf, the champ gets anxious and irritable. Enjoy this one friends...
