EXPLORING THE DONOTIRTO LANANG AND WADON FOUNTAINS The Yogyakarta City Cultural Office, along with the 2025 Cultural Heritage Building Appreciation Jury Team, visited the Donotirto Lanang and Wadon Fountains. The Donotirto Lanang Fountains, located in Kemetiran Kidul Village, are still actively used by residents for bathing and other purposes. These structures, commonly called baths or patirtan, are a reminder of Yogyakarta's history. As part of the sanitation system in Yogyakarta City, the Donotirto Lanang Fountains serve a vital role for the people of the Pringgokusuman area to this day. Construction began in 1929 and included the construction of sluice gates, reservoirs, and an underground drainage system. This irrigation channel is believed to utilize underground irrigation channels that existed during the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, known as the Larangan River. The Larangan River and this irrigation channel share a common source, the Winongo River in the Kricak area, known as the Bendolole Dam. It is constructed of plastered brick and has a cement floor. Several decorations on this fountain, in the form of temple folds and antefixes, have led to its being known locally as the Donotirto Temple. In 2023, the Donotirto Fountain was designated a Cultural Heritage Structure through a Yogyakarta Mayoral Decree. (*) For the full story, see the following video.
