The Last Day Of The Volcano & Volcanologist Predicts The Future of Reykjanes — Part I
In the latest update report on the recent volcanic eruption, reporters Alina Maurer and Art Bicnick make their way to the newest place of danger from the volcano. This week, a berm just one kilometre away from the Svartsengi Power Plant and the Blue Lagoon overflowed with lava, which slowly made its way closer to crucial infrastructure. Fire departments from all over the country were on-site fighting the lava streams with cold water to lower the flow speed. This was the first time water was used to control lava flow since the 1973 Heimaey eruption in the Westman Islands! They also talk to our special guest – one of Iceland's leading volcanologists and petrologists, professor Þorvaldur Þórðarson from the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland. He has studied Icelandic volcanoes for nearly 40 years. Þorvaldur has been one of the most prominent voices in Icelandic media since the volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula picked up in 2021. You can watch Part 2 of our interview with Þorvaldur in next week's episode on Saturday! 🌋 🎤 Presenter: Alina Maurer 🎥 Video: Art Bicnick CHAPTERS: 0:00 Introduction 0:30 Cooling down the lava 1:48 Volcanologists in the field 3:28 Decreasing activity on Sundhnúkar 4:58 Return to Grindavík 7:55 Control the lava flow 11:53 Lava cooling equipment 12:57 1973 eruption at Westman Islands 14:50 Costal eruption danger 16:00 Shield volcano 19:40 Lava pool vs lava lake (Hawaii) 23:44 Predictions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow Iceland Review for the latest news updates on Iceland: www.icelandreview.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Support Iceland Review If you want to get the latest insights into Iceland’s culture, nature and community, you can become a subscriber to Iceland Review: https://www.icelandreview.com/subscribe/ 🗞️ With a print subscription, you can get every issue delivered to your doorstep (worldwide) and enjoy a 100+ page magazine packed with high-quality photography.
