Why The 1963 Corvette Split Window Design Caused A Civil War Inside Chevrolet

In 1962, two of the most powerful men in General Motors were screaming at each other inside the GM Design Studio over a piece of glass. On one side stood Bill Mitchell, GM's legendary design chief — the man who envisioned the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray as a rolling sculpture inspired by the 1930s Bugatti Atlantic, all flowing curves and a dramatic spine running the full length of the roof. On the other stood Zora Arkus-Duntov, the Corvette's chief engineer and a former race car driver who had one priority: building a car that worked. And the split rear window, in his view, was dangerous. What followed was one of the most heated internal battles in American automotive history. Mitchell threatened to kill Duntov's independent rear suspension — one of the most significant engineering advances in Corvette history — if the split window was touched. Duntov reportedly called Mitchell a "red-faced baboon" to his face. Mitchell responded by banning Duntov from the design area entirely. Two giants of GM, both responsible for making the Corvette what it was, at each other's throats over a styling decision that would define a generation. GM executive Ed Cole ultimately made the call: the split window would stay for 1963 — and 1963 only. It was quietly removed for the 1964 model year. Duntov later reflected on the battle with characteristic bluntness, saying there was blood spilled over it. His blood. The irony is that Mitchell's stubbornness created an accident of history. The 1963 Split Window Corvette — produced for exactly one model year, with only 10,594 coupes built out of 21,513 total Corvettes that year — became the rarest, most iconic, and most valuable C2 Corvette ever made. A design flaw that was corrected became the single feature that collectors now pay a premium to own. The car that lost the argument won the legacy. 1963 Corvette Split Window | Bill Mitchell | Zora Arkus-Duntov | C2 Corvette | rarest Corvette ever made | most valuable C2 Corvette | 1963 Corvette coupe | Corvette Sting Ray history | GM design history | Bugatti Atlantic inspiration | split rear window Corvette | Corvette design vs engineering | classic Corvette collector | GM internal conflict | independent rear suspension Corvette | 1963 vs 1964 Corvette | Corvette production numbers | classic car history | American sports car design | vintage Corvette value | Corvette C2 coupe | collector Corvette | most iconic Corvettes ever built | GM design studio | classic American cars | car culture 1960s | Corvette Sting Ray coupe | automotive design history | rare American sports cars | Chevrolet history | Ed Cole GM | Corvette engineering history | muscle car era design #SplitWindowCorvette #1963Corvette #CorvetteStingRay #C2Corvette #BillMitchell #ZoraArkusDuntov #ClassicCorvette #RareCorvette #CorvetteHistory #GMDesign #AmericanSportsCar #CollectorCars #ClassicCars #VintageCorvette #AutomotiveHistory #CarDesign #MostValuableCorvette #ClassicCarCommunity #ChevroletHistory #CorvetteC2 #IconicCars #CarCulture #1960sCars #GMHistory #DesignVsEngineering #CorvetteCollector #AmericanMuscle #ClassicCarRestoration #SportsCar #CarEnthusiast
