Charles Powell and Carlota García Encina (director and senior researcher at the Elcano Royal Institute, respectively) interview María Dolores de Cospedal, Spain's Minister of Defense (2016-2018) and a key figure in Spain's integration into the Atlantic Alliance. María Dolores de Cospedal served as Minister of Defense during the 12th legislature, presided over by Mariano Rajoy. During her tenure, Spain maintained its presence in the Baltic Police and renewed its Patriot missile battery in Turkey as part of NATO's efforts. Furthermore, bilateral relations with the United States were strengthened during Donald Trump's presidency. On May 30, 1982, Spain officially became the sixteenth member of NATO. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Spain's entry into the Atlantic Alliance, during which time it has consolidated its position as a reliable ally and actively participated in the various processes developed within NATO.
